Food waste is one of the biggest problems facing mankind today. Globally, one-third of all food produced goes to waste. In most developed countries, over half of all food waste takes place in the home. If food waste were a country it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, after China and the US. Meanwhile, while all this food goes to waste, nearly a billion people go to bed hungry every day.
Olio is a free app that connects neighbours with each other and volunteers with local businesses, so surplus food can be shared, not thrown away. This could be food nearing its sell-by date in local stores, spare home-grown vegetables, bread from your baker or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. Olio can be used for non-food household items, too, such as toiletries, clothing and kitchen gadgets. Our core mission is to unlock the value of food that is wasted in the home and local community.
Olio has more than one million users all over the world sharing their spare food, feeding bellies, not bins. We subscribes to the old adage, ‘think global, act local’. Hundreds of thousands of Olio users are tackling the global issue of climate change and hunger by keeping food out of landfill by sharing it with their neighbours.
So far, 1.4 million portions of food have been successfully shared: that’s the equivalent of preventing 1,224 CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere or eliminating 3,672,682 car miles from the road.
